A major library renovation is officially coming to downtown Orlando, with construction on the $18 million project expected to begin this fall.
What is the Orlando Public Library renovation?
The Orange County Library System (OCLS) has budgeted $18 million for a capital improvement project at the downtown Orlando Public Library, located at 101 E. Central Boulevard. Roughly half of that budget covers a full roof replacement, with the remainder going toward HVAC upgrades, a redesigned first floor, and other systemwide improvements. As of this writing, $1.38 million has already been spent on the roof replacement, the first-floor renovation design, a bookmobile leased-space renovation, and carpet replacement at the South Trail branch.
What’s changing on the first floor?
The first-floor renovation includes a redesigned entrance, a brighter central lobby, an expanded children’s area, and a new glass-enclosed program room. Renderings released by OCLS show curved wooden service desks for adult services, a geometric ceiling with a colorful striped floor in the main lobby, and a children’s area featuring a tree-shaped ceiling installation that doubles as lighting and sound baffling, along with low shelving and stump-style seating. The library’s Teen/Young Adult section is also moving upstairs to the second floor, into new space with updated carpeting, enhanced lighting, and study pods designated for ages 13 to 18.
What Is the Timeline for the Orlando Public Library Renovation?
The renovation is set to begin in August and take approximately 18 months, completed in three phases. OCLS Director and CEO Steve Powell shared these additional details as part of a July 23 update. The phased approach means the library’s collections and services will remain available to the public throughout construction — patrons won’t lose access to the downtown branch while the work is underway. The project is being led by architectural firm Borrelli + Partners, with Gomez Construction Company handling construction.
Why are the front doors being replaced first?
The library’s front entry doors are being replaced ahead of the larger renovation because the existing recessed entry has created safety and sightline concerns over the years. According to OCLS officials, the current doors have reached the end of their useful life and will be relocated to align with the building’s facade, eliminating the recessed nook. The city gave verbal approval for this part of the project in October 2025.
Will the library’s exterior change?
No — the library’s iconic Brutalist exterior, designed by architect John Johansen and open to the public since the late 1960s, will remain largely unchanged. This renovation is focused on the interior and first floor rather than the building’s distinctive concrete facade.
