Franco’s Flop Fest Returns to Baldwin Park

Flop Fest is back for its fifth year in Baldwin Park, and this year’s belly flop contest has an unusually star-studded judging panel — including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer himself.

What Is Franco’s Flop Fest?

Franco’s Flop Fest is a costumed belly flop competition held annually along New Broad Street in Baldwin Park, in front of Tactical Brewing. Hosted by Franco Furtero, owner of Cholo Dogs, the event has grown from about 500 spectators in its first year to more than 2,000 today.

When and Where Is It Happening?

This year’s Flop Fest takes place Sunday, September 20, at 4882 New Broad St., with the vendor market opening at noon and the belly flop contest starting at 1:45 p.m. Spectator admission is free, though competitors pay a $35 entry fee to take part.

Who’s Judging This Year’s Contest?

Judges include Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, reigning champion Carlos Fonseca, former MLB pitcher Nick Goody, radio personalities Tom and Dan, and Kingston, the Orlando City SC lion mascot. Floppers are scored on creativity, sound, splash, impact and showmanship, with a championship flop-off in the event of a tie.

What Can Spectators Expect?

Past contestants have shown up in beaver suits, sumo gear, wrestling cosplay, scuba equipment and hot dog costumes, all diving into a temporary pool built specifically for the event. Beyond the contest itself, the event includes food trucks, a curated vendor market, and drinks from Tactical Brewing.
