What Is Being Proposed for Camping World Stadium?
Florida Citrus Sports is requesting $54 million in Orange County tourist development tax funding to build a four-level parking garage at Camping World Stadium. The garage would add roughly 1,000 new parking spaces to a campus that currently has only about 3,800 total — a shortage Florida Citrus Sports CEO Steve Hogan says needs to be addressed as the stadium prepares for bigger events. The proposal was pitched this week to the Tourist Development Tax Citizen Advisory Task Force, a board that recommends how revenue collected from hotel and short-term rental taxes should be spent.
Why Does the Parking Garage Include an eVTOL Landing Pad?
The garage is designed with a rooftop landing pad for electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, or eVTOL — essentially, future air taxis. “You might as well connect if you can to the eVTOL future of our community,” Hogan told the board. “The airport is going to have eVTOL capacity, and heli-pad capacity. Having the ability to bring folks into the campus is a nice finishing touch to some of the biggest events.” It’s a forward-looking addition — eVTOL air taxi service doesn’t currently exist in Orlando, but Hogan’s comments suggest the city and airport are planning infrastructure with that technology in mind for the future.
Has the Parking Garage Been Approved?
Not yet — the proposal still needs approval from the Orange County TDT Sports Incentive Committee and the Orange County Commission. Reaction from the board has been mixed. Orange County Commissioner Nicole Wilson called Hogan’s presentation “incredible,” but also raised questions about broader transportation planning, asking how people would actually get to and from the stadium, and noting there are other pressing funding priorities, like mass transit and infrastructure, competing for the same tourist development tax dollars.
What’s the Timeline If It’s Approved?
If funded, the garage would take about 30 months to complete after construction begins — meaning it would not be ready in time for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ temporary stay in Orlando during the 2027 NFL season. The garage is a separate project from Camping World Stadium’s ongoing $400 million renovation, which is on track to finish by summer 2027 and will expand seating capacity to more than 65,000.
