12 New Florida Laws Taking Effect October 1
A dozen new Florida laws take effect October 1, 2026, touching everything from driver registration and license plates to rental fraud protections and Florida’s minimum wage.
What’s Changing for Drivers?
Florida’s SB 488 raises the threshold for reporting non-injury car accidents from $500 to $2,000 in damage, and now requires proof of residency and legal presence — via REAL ID, a U.S. passport, or a foreign passport with Form I-94 — to register a vehicle. The law applies to both personal vehicles and commercial trucks.
What’s Changing for Renters and Landlords?
A new law makes it a third-degree felony to knowingly enter and take possession of a residential rental property using false identity information, forged documents, or identity theft. The measure is aimed at curbing fraudulent rental applications and unauthorized occupancy of rental properties.
Is Florida’s Minimum Wage Changing Too?
Florida’s minimum wage rises to $15 an hour on September 30, with the tipped minimum wage increasing from $10.98 to $11.98 an hour. This marks the final scheduled $1 increase under the 2020 voter-approved constitutional amendment; future increases will be tied to inflation.
What Other Laws Are Taking Effect?
Additional changes include new restrictions on nitrous oxide sales at tobacco and nicotine retailers, tougher penalties for gun violence near schools and illicit drug trafficking, a new criminal offense for violating pretrial no-contact orders, and enhanced penalties for involving minors in animal cruelty. The state will also begin publishing a registry of individuals convicted of animal cruelty, though that system may not be operational until January 2027.
What This Means
Several of these changes directly affect everyday life for Central Florida residents and homeowners — particularly the vehicle registration requirements and new rental fraud protections. Anyone renting, registering a vehicle, or managing rental property in the coming weeks should be aware these rules are now in effect.
